  • Topics Surrounding Mixed Martial Arts

    By Jack Smith | March 10, 2010

Here are some topics being talked about recently surrounding mixed martial arts:

As unbelievable as it may seem the WEC reportedly had a 42% drop in viewers for WEC 47. That event was a very interesting and entertaining event. So I was shocked to hear that they had their second lowest number of viewers in two years.

The next topic being talked about today is the fact that the UFC  has all ready scheduled tryouts for lightweights and light heavyweights for The Ultimate Fighter 12. The date for these tryouts is April 1st. It’s interesting to see how they are planning so much so fast. They have some fights for The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale scheduled all ready and they have The Ultimate Fighter 12 tryouts all ready scheduled. The thing about this is The Ultimate Fighter 11 doesn’t even start on Spike until March 31st.

Lastly a couple of side notes from Dana Whites Twitter Page:

Dana said “DONT MISS ufc primetime GSPvsHARDY tonite on spike tv.” This looks like it will be interesting to watch.

Also Dana said this: “GSPvsHARDY is sold out but I will be tweeting some tix in NYC for you guys.” So it appears UFC 111 GSP vs Hardy has sold out all ready, this is looking to be an entertaining event and should be a good crowd there.

Fighters Put Their Bodies On The Line For Fans And A Paycheck

    By Jack Smith | March 9, 2010

I have a couple of pictures I decided to share with everyone. These photos show how brutal the sport of mixed martial arts can be, so if you are the squeamish type you may want to avoid this article. These photos show how much a fighter is willing to put their bodies through to earn a paycheck and make mixed martial arts fans happy.

The image used above is a photo of Brian Bowles hand after his fight at WEC 47. He broke his hand that’s is the reason why he could not continue the fight. (Bowles continued to fight after he knew he had hurt his hand.)

Now this next image is a photo of Miguel Torres’ forehead after his fight at WEC 47. (Torres continued fighting after his forehead was split open. Before he was submitted with a guillotine Choke.)

These fighters helped put on an exciting show at WEC 47 and them continuing the fight even after being injured shows their dedication to mixed martial arts fans and their determination to finish a fight.

So these fighters put their bodies on the line for the fans and a paycheck(many other fighters do this as well). So this is just an example of what mixed martial arts fighters are willing to do out of respect for their opponent, the sport and for the fans.

The Ultimate Fighter 11 Cast And Fan Thoughts

    By Jack Smith | March 8, 2010

Well The Ultimate Fighter 11 (TUF 11)  is getting closer (debuts on March 31) and it should be interesting because the UFC could use some more middleweights to make things interesting.  Some fans I have talked to or have seen comment about this season of TUF are excited for this season for a couple of reasons. Some say they are happy because they want to see more competition in the middleweight division and some others say it’s good to see some good athletes in this season of TUF.

Here’s the TUF 11 Cast video from Spike:

What do you think about this upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter? Are you looking forward to this season? Do you have an early prediction on who you think will win this season?

Will WEC 47 Help Build Hype For The WEC?

    By Jack Smith | March 6, 2010

The main thing here with WEC is do they have the fighters and the fans to be able to show their events on pay-per-view (PPV). WEC 47 tonight on paper is looking to be a solid event, good fighters fighting at the event and some good fights set up. I think depending on how this event turns out it will prove whether or not the WEC has what it takes to start showing events on PPV.

For the WEC 47 full fight card check out : WEC 47 Fight Card

For event updates check out Pure Adrenaline Radio they are going to be at the event.

This event looks like it should have some entertaining and interesting results, I recommend fight fans to watch it if they are able to. We will probably have the results posted after the event or tomorrow morning.

Chuck Liddell And Jenna Jameson Have A Little Discussion

    By Jack Smith | March 3, 2010

Chuck Liddell and Jenna Jameson had a little discussion on Twitter in response to photos of Liddell on the TUF 11 set. Well this got me thinking about the incident at UFC 109 after Coleman’s fight with Couture.

Here’s an interview video with Tito discussing this incident:

    YouTube Preview Image
Well this is my thoughts on this, Tito said in this interview “you don’t say [expletive] about my family”

So this brings up the topic, why is Jenna having this discussion with Chuck. Maybe its to heat things up before The Ultimate Fighter 11 starts. However on the other hand if Tito doesn’t want people(fighters, fans, and media) to say stuff about his wife wouldn’t you think he would encourage her not to say these things.

Check out Chuck and Jenna’s Twitter pages to read what they have been saying.

Does Strikeforce Need To Take Charge?

    By Jack Smith | March 2, 2010

Well as we all know Dana White is very out spoken and will stand his ground and will take things to court if he needs to. He doesn’t mess around with stuff like that he will put a fighter in their place and say this is happening or we’ll do this.

Well unfortunately it doesn’t seem that way with Strikeforce. I have seen some fan discussions and stuff, some fans are saying Strikeforce appears to be easily intimidated or they are just a pushover. Well here are a few  reasons as to why some fans are saying things like this.

    1) Fans notice that Strikeforce are having trouble with fighters saying they deserve more money or didn’t get what their contact said.

    2) Fans see fighters in Strikeforce that are  unwilling or possibly unable to defend their title.

    3) Strikeforce is unorganized

Well it seems that the only way to avoid developing a bad reputation with this is to stand your ground. Strikeforce needs to pay a fighter what’s in their contract, then they need to stand their ground and say well this is the agreed upon contract terms so this is what were gonna do. If the fighter doesn’t like it they will have to either suck it up or they could try to take it to court. However considering that a contract is an agreement a fighter would most likely not take it to court because they would most likely lose.

Then if you have a fighter unwilling to defend a championship title you have to buckle-down and basically let them know that if they are unwilling or unable to defend their title then they would have to vacate the title.

Lastly in order to make the mma promotion more successful being organized is very important. In order to become more organized they need to address these issues with fighters contracts and fighters not wanting to defend titles, etc. So then they have time to focus on promoting events and planning fights for future events, etc.

Of course you don’t want to make your fighters angry but if they are unwilling to do the things their contract states or are unwilling to do certain fights, then you have to stand your ground and say you will do this or you can take it to the next level such as going to court if necessary.

These things are going to have to happen or fighters will continuously do these type of things.

WEC 47 Is Being Heavily Advertised

    By Jack Smith | March 1, 2010

Well looks like WEC 47 is going to help shape up the WEC for when they begin to start showing events on pay-per-view(PPV). It appears they are using more in depth advertising for WEC 47, I have even seen some google adsense advertising for this event. So there is much more advertisement and promotion being put into this event and it looks like it will draw in a good number of viewers.

They have a solid fight card set-up for the event ( you can check the fight card out here WEC 47 fight card ) So with the solid fight card and the promoting/advertising this event could help the WEC gain more popularity, so then when they debut on PPV they will have a decent buy rate.

Here’s the promo trailer for WEC 47:
